Polarized sunglasses
serve two purposes in fly fishing; they enable you to see in the
water and protect your eyes from harm. Because most fly
fishing takes place in clear rivers or streams, it is an advantage
to see the fish or their shadows before they see you and for all fly
fishermen, novice and professional alike, it is essential to protect
your eyes because you never know when a casting error may occur.
Polarized sunglasses work by blocking
the glare that comes off the water. Sunglasses combined with a
long billed hat to shade your eyes will enable you to see what other
less informed fly fishermen can't. Not only will you be able
to pick out the fish in clear water but you will also be able to see
eddies (place in a stream behind an indentation or behind an
obstruction where the water swirls in the opposite direction of the
stream's main current), underlying rocks or boulders, and how your
fly line and strike indicator is behaving.
Polarized fly fishing glasses come in
a range of shapes and prices. They can range from anywhere
from ten dollars to hundreds of dollars. As long as they are
polarized and fit the shape of your face and are comfortable, any
set of polarized glasses will do for fly fishing.
