Wading
Staffs
Some fly fishing destinations do not
require the use of a wading staff. For others,
it might be a good idea to carry a collapsible wading staff to help
determine where unseen obstacles may lie under the water's
surface. Wading staffs can keep you from falling, getting wet
and fend off uninvited animals. More
than once, I myself have fallen or have witnessed a soaking wet fly
fisherman making his way back up to the truck. These
situations could have been avoided if a wading staff had been put to
its uses. In any stream, river or lake, there are unseen rocks
or ledges hiding where you can't see them. An unwary step can
easily land you in the water taking away from valuable fishing time. Wading
staffs are usually made of lightweight metals or wood and are easily
collapsible and are easily carried on your vest or hung on a belt
loop. Having a wading staff is a great piece of gear to have
in a pinch when crossing a swift river or detecting unseen
obstacles.
